The Chinese government has sustained a five-year campaign to deny, mislead, and misinform the Chinese-speaking world about human-rights crimes against Uyghurs. Please join us for a discussion of the impacts of the government’s Chinese-language denialism and disinformation.

Panelists:

Dr. Jefferson Zhang graduated from Peking University Law School in 2006, majoring in legal theory, with a Ph.D. The same year, he started to work at the Central Nationalities University in China. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Wisconsin Law School-Madison from 2010 to 2011. He is the founder of the weekly magazine “Nine-headed Birds: Free Speech”. He also hosts “Zhang Jie Comments” (YouTube).

Mr. Eric Liu is a former Weibo censor in mainland China; former content quality and review manager. Currently he lives in the United States. From 2011 to 2013, he worked as a review editor at Sina Weibo. In 2016, he anonymously partnered with the Society for the Protection of Journalists to expose the Weibo censorship mechanism. Now he works for China Digital Times.

Dr. Yerbol Yezhenkhan is a Kazakh rights activist from East Turkistan. He was born in Barköl Kazakh Autonomous County of East Turkistan. In 1996, he graduated from Beijing Medical University, and received his Ph.D. in Biophysics from University of Miami in 2005. He now practices medicine in New Mexico and California, and operates his own private clinic.

Ilshat Hassan Kokbore is an activist, writer, and commentator for Radio Free Asia. He is UHRP’s Chinese translator and research consultant, vice chairman of the WUC Executive Committee, and former president of Uyghur American Association.

Moderator:

Dr. Teng Biao is an academic, lawyer and human rights activist. He was formerly a lecturer at the China University of Political Science and Law and has been a visiting fellow at Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, New York University, Hunter College, and Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights.
