Senior Researcher (Full-time, Hybrid or Remote)

The Uyghur Human Rights Project is a Washington, D.C.-based human rights organization that promotes human rights and democracy for the Uyghur people. UHRP is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to provide credible information on the situation of the Uyghur people and to mobilize effective action to protect their human rights. UHRP’s advocacy seeks to engage speakers of English, Chinese, Uyghur, and other languages. As a small and dynamic organization, UHRP may consider an individual in this position for internal advancement.

The Senior Researcher reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for overseeing UHRP’s research projects. Availability for hybrid work in Washington, D.C. is preferable, but candidates outside of the D.C. area willing to work remotely will also be considered.

The responsibilities of the Senior Researcher include:

  • Overseeing UHRP’s research team, including outside contractors, research fellows, and interns.
  • Developing and implementing UHRP research strategies by formulating topics and methodologies, identifying and acquiring appropriate data sources, and consulting on related advocacy initiatives.
  • Serving as the organization’s in-house expert, and consulting with outside experts, on rigorous research methodologies .
  • Authoring regular narrative reports, briefings, and op-eds.
  • Producing content for the UHRP website, including press releases, in collaboration with other staff and outside contributors.
  • Ensuring all UHRP publications meet organizational standards for quality and accuracy.
  • Responding to information requests.
  • Overseeing the translation of UHRP publications, dependent upon language ability.
  • Fostering collaborative relationships with other research and advocacy NGOs.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel.

Qualifications:

  • 3 – 6 years’ research experience using quantitative and qualitative methods preferred.
  • Familiarity with human rights issues facing the Uyghur people required; Expertise in the politics and culture of Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia or Turkey desirable.
  • Advanced professional writing and editing experience required.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English required.
  • Fluency in Chinese, Arabic, Uyghur or another Turkic language preferred.

Compensation:

  • $65,000 – $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
  • $450 monthly stipend for healthcare costs.
