Beijing’s Persecution of the Uyghurs is a Modern Take on an Old Theme

The drive to silence Uyghur intellectuals and artists intensified with the launch of the re-education camps. According to a report released by the Uyghur Human Rights Project, at least 386 Uyghur intellectual and cultural figures have been interned, imprisoned, or disappeared. The list includes professors and university lecturers, journalists, poets, film and stage artists, and doctors and medical researchers. Among those interned are 21 scholars from Xinjiang University.
