China funds ‘whitewashed’ tours of Xinjiang to bring back visitors

Last year a report by the Uyghur Human Rights Project found western tour groups were running trips into Uyghur homes as a “key tactic in the surveillance and exploitation of Uyghurs”.

The report said: “Specific sites in Kashgar, Turpan, Urumchi, and other destinations included on tour itineraries are connected to genocide through repression of religious belief, destruction of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, as well as internment and imprisonment.”
