China’s Cultural Genocide Against the Uyghurs

Luncheon Discussion on US China Relations and Human Rights
The National Interest Foundation is pleased to invite you to attend our luncheon discussion where our assembled China experts, Gulchehra Hoja and Omer Kanat will tackle the issue of Uyghur Muslims and the Xinjang camps.

The mass indoctrination system in Xinjiang, China gained global attention in recent months. A United Nations committee raised the alarm about the plight of the Uyghurs this past summer. In October, the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China raised the prospect “crimes against humanity” are being committed against Muslims on Chinese soil. Xinjiang’s mass indoctrination centers are expected to be an area of focus during a major United Nations Human Rights Council review of China this month.

About our Speakers:
Gulchehra Hoja was born and raised in Xinjiang, China. While still in China, she began working in media relations and journalism. Ms. Hoja moved to America in 2001 and began working for Radio Free Asia, leaving behind her family to later find out her brother and dozens of her relatives went missing or were detained, and her parents held in a medical facility. Unable to return home, Hoja is committed to utilize her platform in America to speak out against China’s crackdown on Uyghur citizens and other minority groups.

Omer Kanat is currently chairman of the Executive Committee of the World Uyghur Congress. He helped found the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) in 2003, as well as the World Uyghur Youth Congress, where he served as president from 1996-2000. Mr. Kanat was the Senior Editor of Radio Free Asia’s Uyghur Service, where he covered the War in Afghanistan & Iraq, edited Uyghur-language news, and conducted interviews with prominent figures in Inner Asia, including his holiness the Dalai Lama.
