Palmer and Udun: Beijing Olympics – where are the Uyghur athletes?

There are almost no competitors from among this ethnic group in Beijing’s Olympic Games. Why not? It all started with a cancelled soccer match.
When the Winter Olympics opened Feb. 4 in China, Dinigeer Yilamujiang lit the Olympic Flame during the opening ceremony. She is a skier and a Uyghur, a member of the Turkic ethnic group native to Xinjiang. Clearly, Beijing was sending out a message that the reports of re-education camps, mandatory sterilizations and forced labour targeting the Uyghur population are the “lie of the century” (as claimed by Chinese Ambassador to Canada Cong Peiwu).
